Other Info Weight 7 pounds, 9 ounces Length 20 inches When I was 2.5 months old, I developed a severe cold and ear infection and was put in the hospital. When I was 3 months old, I was placed in a Maternity Shelter for three weeks where I was in ill health but recovering. At 4.5 months, my birth mother and I ended up at a homeless shelter. The next day I was taken to the hospital by the staff of the shelter suffering from a fever, malnourishment and severe diaper rash. In January 1960, my mother returned for me. For the three months she was gone I was cared for at the Maternity Shelter. She released my for adoption on January 18, 1960, but kept trying to care for me and get me back. All contact with the agency ceased in March 1960 and I was adopted that same month. One year later (1961) she gave birth to a boy and named my biological father as his biological father.

Other Information My birth mother was the fifth of seven children. Her father drank and gambled. He was murdered at home when my birth mother was 12, possibly by her older brother. Her mother then married a man who drank and was violent and who worked sporatically. He molested my birth mother and she spent some time in a children's shelter and in foster homes. One of her brothers was in prison, one in the military and one sister was raised by a relative. My birth mother married at 15 and moved to the Midwest. When she was 17, she returned to Greenville in order to work and pay bills; she said she was unable to find a job in the same town as her husband. She moved in with her mother and worked as a waitress. As a child, she had pneumonia and had psoriasis. She had once been told that she could not become pregnany and was happy to be so. She had names picked out (Jacqueline was picked. but she did not name me this when I was born). She had a difficult pregnancy -- dizziness, fainting spells, pain and spotting. She began prenatal care at 6 months. She was tested for maternal diabetes and put on a diet because of rapid weight gain. She lived with a series of friends during her pregnancy. In (approximately) May 1960, she went to work as a waitress but soon got a uterine infection. She lived with friends for a couple of weeks at a time. In approximately July/August 1960, she and a boyfriend were arrested for disorderly conduct and jailed briefly. In mid September 1960 (approx) she ended up at a homeless shelter with me. I was taken to the hospital by shelter staff with a fever, malnourishment & severe diaper rash. My birth mother was missing. In January 1960, she returned for me. She visited me often at the Maternity Shelter. She said she wanted to keep me but had no means to support me. She finally released me for adoption on January 18, 1960. Over the next couple of months, she changed her mind several times and looked into getting me back. Contact with the agency ceased in March. I was placed with my adoptive family on March 28, 1960. In approximately March 1961, she gave birth to another child, a boy, and named my biological father as his biological father.

Other Information My birth father had been divorced prior to marrying my birth mother. He was very close to his mother. He was an only child. After discharge from the military, he worked as a hospital orderly. He was on probation for statutory rape (a charge he claimed was unfair). During the pregnancy, my birth father divorced my birth mother on grounds of desertion. He had divorce papers served but they were either served to the wrong person or her signature of receipt was forged. The divorce was final before my birth mother knew anything about it. My birth father married a former girlfriend a few months later. In approximately March of 1961, my birth mother gave birth to a boy and named my birth father as his father.
